Blogathon 2006 (29 of 48): Am I a bad driver?

Just recently it has started to come to my attention that I may not be as good a driver as I first thought. I mean, touch wood, I have not yet crashed. It is bound to happen, but I would rather put it off for as long as possible!

I passed my theory test first time, and my practical driving test first time after only six months of driving lessons. I think that’s pretty impressive, even if I do say so myself.

But as I get more and more experience of driving, I’m really starting to feel that there were a lot of things I didn’t get taught.

I didn’t know there was a safety device on reverse gear. I don’t really know about braking while you’re turning a corner, or apexes, or anything like that.

To learn to drive you must be able to do a three point turn, an emergency stop and reverse around a corner. The three point turn? Excellent maneouvre. Absolutely useful.

An emergency stop is okay, but if you gotta stop then you stop, you can’t really be taught that, can you?

And have you ever, in your entire life, reversed around a corner? Why would you? You would just find another place to park.

Part of me feels a little bit cheated, like I was only taught enough to get me through the test and that was it. But hey, I passed my test first time, didn’t I?

I’m not a bad, dangerous driver, I just think I still have more to learn.
